Get it?
G started camp this morning. It's speech camp! It's run through the Speech, Language & Hearing program at one of the local universities and I think it's going to be one of those things that reminds me why living in such a populated area is worth it sometimes--so many resources at our fingertips!
G will be attending three mornings a week for 2.5 hours. It's held at a local church/preschool and is set up a lot like preschool only they focus on speech and OT goals primarily. (Though don't let that make you think they are not having tons of fun! From the looks and sounds of it they have jam-packed days full of fun!)
It was so awesome bringing her in this morning. She walked with me from the car, we met up with a bunch of kids and because the door was locked she just stood with me holding my hand like a big girl until they called us in. She got a little freaked out when we all assembled in the auditorium while trying to register, but it was short-lived and not remotely a big deal. It helps that she knows two of the boys in her group! There are 8 kids in her "class" and she is the only girl (I find that happens a lot). When we walked back to the room where they will be meeting every morning she sat down at the table with the other kids and began coloring a picture of a saxophone, saying, you guessed it "saxophone." (Random note: Georgia LOVES instruments and knows most of them by name.)
She has a really sweet aide who is a grad student studying to be an SLP--each kid has their "own person". Caitlyn will come out to grab G out of the car in the morning and bring her back out at the end of the day and help her throughout her time at camp with things like toileting and moving about the building and playground etc. It seems really well-organized and Georgia fit right in once we went to her room. Got a note in her bag when she got home that said she had a great first day! I am SO SO SO happy that she gets this opportunity. I really think it's going to be amazing.
Funny note: when we first got there a mom and her daughter were waiting by the door. The mom asked me if we'd been there before and I told her this was our first time. "How old is she?" she asked, indicating towards Georgia. When I told her four she couldn't believe it. Her CUTIE daughter (who also has DS) was 7 and about the same size as G. "She must be on the typical growth charts, huh??"
Yup. I guess she is getting tall!
When Georgia got home I asked her how her first day was and she told me "like camp." I think it's going to be a hit!

Fun! Funny about the sax too - we have a toy one that my girl LOVES, along w/her piano. I've got to find a music class or something.

B is almost always the only girl also. She started EST yesterday, and it has happened again.
Glad G loved camp! Sounds like a neat program!
